Clinical Hypnosis in Surgery
The simple hypnotic techniques taught in this program reduce anxiety and fear. Mental imagery includes rehearsal of the surgical procedure and subsequent full recovery.
The program includes suggestions that are specifically designed for each individual to meet his/her exact needs, such as control of bleeding, increase of his/her immune system function, healing of the incision, and control or elimination of pain.
The last hypnosis session may take place just prior to the surgery in the hospital.
Note: Complementary and alternative therapies used in this hypnosis program may include: hypno-analysis, age regression, age progression, guided imagery, visualization, mind-body connection techniques, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), deep breathing exercises and techniques, time line therapy, selective awareness, relaxation therapy, past life therapy, and post-hypnotic suggestions.

* American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis suggests that hypnosis, suggestions, and relaxation are underutilized techniques that can shorten postoperative hospital stays, promote the physical recovery of patients from surgery, and aid in the psychological and emotional response of patients following surgery.
* Studies done by the University of LiLege, Belgium, suggest that when hypnosis was used as an adjunct therapy in conscious sedation procedures, it resulted in better pain and anxiety relief than conventional intravenous sedation and allowed for a significant reduction in pain medication. Hypnotic patients also reported significantly higher levels of satisfaction.
According to Dr. Benson, the author of the book titled Timeless Healing the Power and Biology of Belief health and well-being can be maximized with a balanced application of pharmaceuticals, surgery and procedures, and self-care. Dr. Benson believes that the ideal model for medicine is a three legged stool. One leg, that which patients can do for themselves, or self-care, is, according to Dr. Benson, the most disparaged and neglected today.
The two other legs, represented by pharmaceuticals and medical procedures are what today’s health care relies upon almost exclusively. Yet, the “stool of well being” can be balanced only by the appropriate application of self-care, medications and medical procedures. Not surprisingly, our health and well being, just like the three legged stool, may become unbalanced when we rely almost entirely on pharmaceuticals, surgery, and procedures. Dr. Benson states that we need to embrace self-care to optimize medicine, health, and well-being as well as “to balance the stool.”
Clearly, health care is a multi-strategy discipline. The services that the health care profession offers or does for patients are splendid for problems it can solve. Yet, it cannot compensate for the self-care the patients can use to support and potentiate the interventions offered by their physicians. The health care system is simply capable of assisting patients with help they require during their illness, but sensible self-care is the crucial part that promotes and sustains effective healing and health.
