Hypnosis for Pain Control and Management
Hypnosis is one of the oldest forms of pain control and anesthesia: It is completely natural, safe, and has no side effects. Hypnosis can be used as a sole form of pain control or with pain medication as it potentiates its effects. - Vlasta Domin, DCH
Pain control techniques can be taught prior to a medical or dental procedure or surgery to palliate or eliminate accompanying discomfort. They are recommended for chronic pain of organic origin, as well as psychosomatic conditions.
These techniques are also very effective for reducing or eliminating pain and discomfort in painful medical treatments and procedures, such as frequent change of dressings in burn patients.
In six hypnosis and hypnotherapy sessions the individuals learn hypnotic relaxation, self-hypnosis, mental imagery, and hypno-anesthesia. They also explore the “rewards” of pain and learn to substitute pleasure for pain and discomfort. As a result of the hypnotic pain control intervention, they increase their overall threshold for pain.
Additionally, the participants in this program learn “time distortion techniques” to alter their subjective perception of time and to expand the time when they feel pain-free and comfortable.
Because the techniques included in this program are so powerful, they can be used only for conditions properly diagnosed by a physician. Importantly, participation in this program requires a prescription from a medical doctor.
Note:
Complementary and alternative therapies used in this hypnosis program may include: hypno-analysis, age regression, age progression, guided imagery, visualization, mind-body connection techniques, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), deep breathing exercises and techniques, time line therapy, selective awareness, relaxation therapy, past life therapy, and post-hypnotic suggestions.

The research published in the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis on the use of hypnotic techniques in problems of intractable organic pain documented patient-estimated pain control from 80% for minimal relief to 90% for maximum relief one year after treatment. The types of intractable pain treated were headaches, backaches, arthritic pain, postherpetic neuralgial pain, and TMJ pain.
This program may be combined with “Preparation for Surgery.”
